Tongariro National Park

Skiing

An easy 30 minute drive from Wellesley Lodge takes you to the foot of the majestic Mt Ruapehu, which holds pride of place at the centre of Tongariro National Park.

Standing alongside its sister mountains, Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Tongariro, the snow-capped Mt Ruapehu is home to two of New Zealand’s largest ski areas: Whakapapa and Turoa.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner, you’ll be well catered for at either of these ski fields. The facilities include cafes, challenging and exciting terrain parks, rental equipment, childcare (at Turoa), retail, medical centres, and ski/board workshop services. Snow schools are also available at both Whakapapa and Turoa, including adults’ and children’s programmes.

Other activities

Even when there’s not much snow, the mountains still have plenty to offer.

Mountain biking is a fun activity and the Ruapehu region offers two notable tracks: Timber Trail and Mountains to Sea – Nga Ara Tuhono.
